In a candidate led market legal recruiters are competing to attract the very best candidates when the pool seems not much bigger than a goldfish bowl, especially in a specialist area of law. And some days it can literally feel like you are trying to find a needle in a haystack, blindfolded! But finding that candidate is just the beginning. The real question is how do you look to turn a passive candidate into an active one; or put a candidate whose talent is being hidden away into the spot light; or convert a candidate who, having been inundated with head-hunt calls, has become disillusioned with the whole recruitment industry?
Call it the art of persuasion, or you could refer to it as control, impact, and effect. However, I like to think of it as much, much more than that. Influence. The word resonates with me as it reflects for me personally the integrity and professionalism that I believe is required to build and nurture trusted relationships. Especially today when technology and social media show no signs of slowing down. I like to go old school, and back to my roots of being consultative, listening to candidates’ and clients’ needs. It is not one size fits all, but rather tailoring and creating opportunities where they initially did not exist, and working in harmony as a mentor, looking at trends, keeping up to date with the legal market. These are the biggest influences in achieving a successful outcome for the candidate, the client, and in delivering talent.
I feel passionately about this, and was absolutely surprised and thrilled, albeit slightly terrified (I am not going to lie) to be nominated for an award. Let’s face it, I have never won anything before in my life, I gave up doing the lottery back in the 2000s! Winning this award has been a huge honour, not least, as it was Influential Business Woman, Legal Recruitment. Me influential? I may need some persuasion on that.
